"True love begins when nothing is looked for in return."
- Antoine De Saint-Exupery
True love began when Raith's guards brought in Thomas, shot, dying, Harry stumbling in their wake, and nobody else, and she knew what they meant for her to do. And she stepped into it willingly.
True love began each time he fed on her, but only took so much, barely more than the surplus she had because of the disorder she had.
True love began each time she chose to learn, to listen and ask, rather than remain a clever but ignorant street urchin pet.
True love began when the son of the White King decided to take under his wing and to his bed a girl that a Red Court vampire had set her sights on.
True love began in the throes of passion. One last time.
True love was waking up, not even fully aware you were alive, too feeble to be much of anything. And then voices reached you, and one name only returned. The image of gray eyes and dark curls and pale skin.
Pink blood.
True love was your brother's words, she’s still alive, you suicidal dolt, making the world start spinning again.
True love was the sense of him kneeling by your chair outshining the bright, warm day.
True love was kissing until your lips were burning, and keeping on kissing despite the pain, just because it might never, ever happen again.
True love was care not to touch him, no matter how much that hurt; to the point where it was almost harder to keep this up than give up. Almost.
True love was your cousin's threats to her making you break into violence that startled and defeated a strong and well-fed vampire, leaving her burned and hurt, only to get twin strands of hair blister the skin of your chest.
True love is sitting by his bedside, seeing the savageness in his face, in the position of his body, and seeing it melt, just for a moment, when your eyes met.
True love is poison for you.
And you drink, and drink again.
